The mission of the Civic Engagement Institute (CEI) is to educate and the current generation that there are many ways in which people participate in civic, community and political life and, by doing so, express their engaged citizenship. From volunteering to voting, from community organizing to political advocacy, the defining characteristic of active civic engagement is the commitment to participate and contribute to the improvement of one’s community, neighborhood and nation. To accomplish this mission, the CEI provides participants with a diverse and in-depth experience to learn more about the needs of their communities, including the challenges facing local and state government, how to advocate for change, and the ways in which people can engage in their communities, by running for political office, serving on a land use and planning board or serving as an emergency responder when needed. The CEI not only educates participants on the various dimensions of civic participation, but also establishes a network of people committed to community improvement through civic engagement.
