The Stakeholders Spotlighted in November Issue of O, The Oprah Magazine

Founder Catherine Hedgeman One of 80 Selected for National Recognition

ALBANY, NY (October 15, 2008) – The Stakeholders, Inc., a non-profit organization whose mission is to cultivate an informed and active creative class dedicated to building diverse and sustainable communities throughout New York’s Capital Region, is receiving national attention in the November 2008 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine. Catherine “Kate” Hedgeman, an Albany attorney and founder of The Stakeholders, is featured in the article “Women Rule! A Crash Course In Changing the World.” Hedgeman’s profile appears online at www.oprah.com/omagextras.

The article details the experiences of the winners of Women Rule!, a national leadership project competition that was a first-time-ever joint venture between O, The Oprah Magazine and the White House Project, a non-profit organization committed to advancing women from all backgrounds into positions of power. Hedgeman was one of 80 women selected from among 3,000 applicants who had initiated a leadership project and wanted to take it to the next level. In June, she and her fellow honorees were invited to New York City for an intensive weekend of lectures, workshops and individual coaching by top women leaders in business, philanthropy and politics.

“I’m a third-generation Albany resident,” Hedgeman says. “It’s always been a place I loved, and I noticed a lot of young people leaving after they graduated from college. Albany is a great place to live and work; my goal is to get that across.” The Stakeholders invites members of the community to take a personal stake in the Capital Region’s future by participating in such key areas as Civic Engagement, Sustainable Communities, Arts & Culture and Philanthropy.

The organization’s philanthropic mission was advanced earlier this year by the launch of The Stakeholders Foundation, a vital source of Next Generation community grants and financial support to The Stakeholders, Inc. The Young Philanthropists Institute (YPI), an initiative of The Stakeholders Foundation, will be held from October 2008 through May 2009. Each month, young professionals will attend in-depth workshops on topics including non-profit needs, effective board membership, financial planning & giving, ethics, fundraising and grant writing. Eligibility for the YPI requires a minimum $100 donation to The Stakeholders Foundation.

Since June 2008, The Stakeholders and The Stakeholders Foundation have welcomed more than 25 new board members under the age of 45 and have raised more than $16,000 primarily through one-time donations of $100.

“The sheer amount of time, commitment and resources Kate has invested in The Stakeholders and The Stakeholders Foundation is mind-boggling,” said Richard Nacy, President of The Stakeholders Foundation. “I am in awe of her capacity to make things happen and am honored and more than a bit humbled to work with her.”

“Kate’s recognition by O, The Oprah Magazine is a major validation of the hard work and countless hours that she has invested into bringing The Stakeholders and The Stakeholders Foundation from concept to reality,” said Jim Salengo, Vice President of Marketing & Communications for The Stakeholders, Inc. “Many, many more people will now appreciate the vibrancy of New York’s Capital Region and our organization’s efforts to create an even brighter future here.”
